This is a cleaned-up recording of Brian Cox reading one of the Trebus Project interviews for a charity fundraiser in 20091. The original sound quality was terrible, with lots of coughing, shuffling, and bad acoustics. The day after the event, I transferred the recording onto a memory stick and forgot about it.
A few days ago, while sorting through some old paperwork, I found the memory stick and ran the recording through an AI filter, and I'm amazed by the results. It’s not perfect - the volume levels aren’t completely consistent - but it’s clear, and all the coughs have been removed.
Cox told me he wanted to read John’s story quickly, “to sort of garble it". He felt that there were so many powerful lines and thought-provoking moments that performing it at a natural pace would be too much for an audience expecting an evening of theatre anecdotes.
The event organisers were overwhelmed with letters commending Cox's reading and highlighting the profound emotional impact of the story.
We raised £40,000 for dementia research.
The Trebus Project is a collection of over 200 verbatim stories, based on interviews with people living in care homes.
